Calm Before the Duel in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana Intermezzo
The Best Moments
Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana

I am Pietro Mascagni, and I would love to share the best moments of my Cavalleria rusticana Intermezzo with you. You will hear how forty-eight measures of gentle strings, harp, and pipe organ create a moment of pure calm right before a tragic village duel. On this site, the other composers and I also help you recognize our music whenever it plays, so feel free to visit our Trainer and give it a go.

Giving the Trumpet Players a Coffee Break
I start the Cavalleria rusticana Intermezzo right after everyone in the village has walked into the Easter church, leaving the stage completely empty while the curtain stays up. I sent the brass, woodwinds, and percussion out for a rest and let the strings begin a quiet, steady melody in F major, which feels like that peaceful moment on Sunday morning before the relatives start arguing over dinner.
Bringing a Pipe Organ to a Knife Fight
I bring in the harp and the pipe organ for the middle section to support the strings as the main tune swells up with warm, sweeping emotion. It sounds so gentle and prayerful that people later turned it into an Ave Maria, probably forgetting that in my opera this sweet music is just the calm breath before a fatal knife duel.
Forty Curtain Calls for Forty-Eight Measures
I let that big, singing melody climb to a full, heartfelt peak before I guide the strings back down into a soft, lingering close. The whole piece is only 48 measures long, which is barely enough time to boil an egg, yet at our Rome premiere in 1890 the audience loved it so much they demanded an encore and gave me 40 curtain calls.

I hope you have enjoyed walking through my favorite moments in the Cavalleria rusticana Intermezzo with me. Even though the music itself only lasts for 48 measures, there is still plenty more to discover about how this little interlude came to be and the life it has led since its premiere.
