Yo Cosmic Planet Tour of Holst's The Planets
V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age

The Planets, Op. 32

Holst presenting a listen guide for his The Planets's V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
Yo yo yo, hold up, it's Holst, fam, and I'm about to break down V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age for ya, so c'mon in, ayo! You're gonna hear flutes, bassoons and harps tickin' like a nervous clock, then solemn trombones roll in and the whole thing swells to a triple-forte tubular bells blast before it fades out, bruh, and that's worth your time, no cap! Me and my fellow composers also coach ya on this site to recognize our pieces the second they hit, so  go test the Trainer  and show off, deadass!

Tick-Tock, Grandpa Clock

Yo yo yo, listen up, homie, Saturn hits ya with a ticking clock right outta the gate, so lean in, sheesh! Flutes, bassoons and harps are the clock gang, tick-tickin' away like a jittery hamster on a treadmill, wild, right?! Then the trombones roll in with a solemn melody that's heavy as a fridge on a staircase, fam, so soak up that mood! Keep your ears peeled for the tubular bells too, 'cause apart from the timpani they're the only percussion in the whole thing, bruh, talk about a VIP!

Why I Slapped Old Age On It

Hold up, fam, why'd I stick 'the Bringer of Old Age' on this one, huh?! 'Cause astrology was my launchpad for the whole suite, not astronomy and not some mythology pop quiz, straight up! That chat on my 1913 holiday in Spain lit the fuse, and Saturn's the piece where time creeps up behind ya like a sneaky cat, big yikes! The story goes it was my favorite movement of the bunch, so ya know I'm not messin' around, homie!

Not Your Cookie-Cutter Recipe

Yo, picking the form for Saturn was a whole saga, fam, and it's more like a long slow walk than a neat textbook recipe, lowkey! It starts Adagio in 4/4 with a few brief animato bursts, and later an Andante in 3/2 slides in, ayo! Everything climbs up to a triple-forte peak and then melts away quietly, mind-blowin' stuff, no joke! I'm gonna crack open each part one by one next, so buckle up, buttercup!

Section 1: Grandpa's Wall Clock Has Anxiety

Okay okay okay, we kick off Adagio in 4/4, which is super slow, snail-in-molasses slow, bruh! Flutes, bassoons and harps tick that clock theme over and over, and it's creepy and hypnotic at the same time, fr fr! Nothing's rushin' here, fam, so the mood is hushed, heavy, and kinda gloomy like a rainy Monday! Just sit with those ticks, 'cause they set up the whole story, ya feel me?!

Section 2: Trombones Pull Up Lookin' Mega Serious

Yo, now the trombones step in with that solemn melody, and it's grave and noble like a king who forgot where he parked, dang! Every now and then those brief animato bursts jolt the music forward, like a sudden hiccup in the middle of a sleepy nap, whoa! Then the tempo slumps right back down to the slow walk, so it's push, pull, push, pull, like old knees on a staircase, ouch! That tug-of-war is the mood shift to catch, homie, 'cause it keeps the tension simmerin'!

Section 3: Andante Struts In Triple Time

Check it, later on an Andante in 3/2 shows up, and the pace picks up just a smidge, hallelujah! That swingin' three-beat feel rocks the music side to side, kinda like a rocking chair that's seen some things, ayo! The gloom doesn't leave, though, fam, it just trudges forward with a bit more shuffle in its slippers! Feel that steady march rollin' on, 'cause it's winding up the spring for the big boom comin' next, I swear!

Section 4: The Bell Blowout And The Big Fade

Hang on to your hat, bruh, 'cause the music swells up into a triple-forte climax with the tubular bells clangin' like the whole town's clock tower lost its mind, boom! That's the loudest, biggest, most chest-rattlin' moment, and it hits harder than a piano falling off a roof, cartoon style! Then everything drains away, softer and softer, until it fades quietly like a candle on its last wick, whew! No big fireworks finale here, fam, just a hush that leaves ya starin' at the wall for a second, deep stuff!

Hit Play, Don't Be Shy

Alright, homies, now it's your turn, so smash that play button and let Saturn swallow ya whole, c'mon! Keep that ticking clock, the grumpy trombones, and the big bell blast in your back pocket while ya listen, easy peasy! Then catch the quiet fade at the end, 'cause that's where the magic sneaks up on ya, trust me! I hope the ride gives ya the same shivers I got while writing it, so go on, dive in, sheesh!

Yo yo yo, fam, we just rode through V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age together, and my heart's still tickin' like that clock in the flutes, bassoons and harps, sheesh! Then the trombones rolled in with that solemn tune, the tubular bells smashed a triple-forte wall right through your ribs, and the whole thing faded out quiet as a ninja tiptoein' through a library, no cap! Folks report it's my favorite movement of the whole suite, and, bruh, how could it not be, with all that time-ticked, gray-haired drama?! Did ya enjoy learnin' about the listen guide to V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age, deadass? Ayo, there's still a whole galaxy of The Planets left to dig into, homies, and we've barely scratched the surface, fr fr! So tap those links on the page and keep explorin', c'mon, and don't leave me hangin' like a grandpa at a school dance, lol!
