IX. The Hut on Fowl's Legs (Baba Yaga)

Pictures at an Exhibition

Mussorgsky presenting a listen guide for his Pictures at an Exhibition's IX. The Hut on Fowl's Legs (Baba Yaga)
Yo yo yo, it's me, Mussorgsky, and I'm 'bout to break down IX. The Hut on Fowl's Legs (Baba Yaga) for ya, fam! Ya gonna catch big clock bells clangin' and then a wild whirlwind chase with the witch zoomin' in her mortar, and that's a thrill ride so nuts it's worth every second, bruh! Smash  the Trainer  if ya wanna test yourself, 'cause on this site me and my fellow composers teach ya to recognize our pieces the second they play, homie!

Piano Only, Fam, No Backup Dancers

Aight, lean in close, friend, 'cause this beast is just one solo piano, no band, no choir, no random dude whackin' a gong, and it still hits like a freight train, deadass! It's two hands against the whole wide world, bruh, and those hands go absolutely feral from the very first second, I'm not even playin'! Tune your ears to the low, thunderin' stomps way down in the basement of the keyboard, 'cause that's the witch's hut clompin' across the yard, while the jumpy, clangy bits up high are big clock bells janglin' like crazy, no cap! Don't stress about memorizin' a thing, homie, just hang on tight and let the wild ride yeet ya all around the room!

Why Did I Slap A Chicken-Legged Clock On It?

Okay so, peep this, my buddy Viktor Hartmann sketched a design for a clock shaped like the witch's hut on hen's legs, and I swear that's the wildest timepiece anybody ever cooked up, fr fr! Baba Yaga is the witch who lives in that hut, so her name went right on the title, 'cause a hut on fowl's legs with no lady inside is just a sad lonely chicken, ya feel me? Then I added her flight in a mortar myself, since the clock sketch didn't come with that, and a witch zoomin' around in a giant grindin' bowl was way too sick to leave out, no joke! That's how one little clock design turned into a hut, a clock, and a chase scene all at once, which is basically three party tricks for the price of one, y'all!

The Shape Of The Madness, Y'all

Pickin' the form for this thing was a whole adventure, homie, 'cause I wanted it to feel like a runaway wagon with brakes that only work sometimes! I went with ternary form plus a coda, which means a first part, a middle part, the first part swingin' back around for round two, and then a big blowout ending, ya dig? It's not a sonata and it's not a rondo, nope, no way, this one's a three-slice sandwich with a firework stuck on top, bro! Stick around, 'cause I'm crackin' open each slice one by one in the next few paragraphs, and trust me, it's gonna slap!

Section 1: The Witch Revs Her Engine

I mark this opener 'Allegro con brio, feroce' in 2/4, and that's Italian for 'go fast, go wild, and look mean doin' it,' so strap in, fam! The beat stomps and tumbles forward like a whirlwind chase, and there's zero chill in it, not a single second to catch your breath, bruh! The mood is pure panic-meets-party, like somebody lit a firecracker under a broomstick, and the whole thing just keeps barrelin' along! This is the first slice of the sandwich, and it's already spicier than a whole bucket of hot sauce, no cap!

Section 2: The Clock Starts Creepin'

Now the middle part rolls in, and the chase hits the brakes so hard your sneakers squeak, sheesh! The bells of that giant clock take over the vibe, and the whole mood flips from wild sprint to spooky tiptoe, like the hut is starin' right at ya! The ground shifts under your feet in here, and the music feels like a haunted hallway where every door might have a witch behind it, I'm dead serious! That's the filling of my sandwich, homie, and it's creepy, crunchy, and absolutely not for the faint of heart!

Section 3: Round Two, Ding Ding!

Boom, the first part crashes back in, and the whirlwind chase is on again like it never left, y'all! Same fierce stomp, same 2/4 sprint, but this time ya know what's comin', so it's like gettin' chased by the same witch twice, and somehow it's scarier, wild right? Your heart's already racin' from that spooky middle, so the return hits ya like a bucket of ice water to the face! That's ternary form doin' its thing, my guy, the tune goes out, takes a detour, then comes back swingin' with a vengeance!

Section 4: The Coda Goes Absolutely Bonkers

Last up is the coda, which is the extra blowout I stuck on the end, and it's basically the witch zoomin' off in her mortar with sparks flyin' everywhere! Everything speeds up and piles on top of itself, like a hundred clocks goin' off in a thunderstorm, and I love it so much, bro! The chase doesn't fizzle out polite and quiet, oh no, it goes out in a full-on crash, like a drum kit fallin' down a flight of stairs! And then, boom, it launches straight into the next piece, but that's a story for another day, so hold your horses, fam!

Go Hit Play, Ya Legend

Alright, the moment's here, friend, so go smash that play button and let this wild ride swallow ya whole! Keep our little chat rattlin' around your head while it plays, like the chicken-legged hut, the clock bells, the chase, and that mega-crash of a finish! Spot the three slices of the sandwich as they zip by, and see if ya can catch that witch peekin' round the corner in the middle, ya dig? I hope this ride gives ya the same jolt it gave me when I wrote it, 'cause it was a total blast, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Yo yo yo, so did ya dig this deep dive into The Hut on Fowl's Legs (Baba Yaga), fam? Was it a total blast, or did it just make your brain do backflips, bruh? Lemme tell ya, I'm not even close to done, 'cause Pictures at an Exhibition is packed like a suitcase on vacation, deadass! There's a whole gallery of other pictures waitin' on ya, from that lurchin' gnome to the big finale, and every single one's got its own wild story, no cap! So go smash those links right here on the page, homie, and keep strollin' through the exhibition with me, 'cause the show ain't over till ya say so!
