And hey, me and my fellow composers are gonna teach ya on this site to recognize my pieces the second they hit, so c'mon, hit the Trainer and give it a whirl, bruh!
---
Baby Modest, Tiny Piano Nerd
Yo yo yo, buckle up, 'cause I popped into this world in 1839 in a sleepy little village called Karevo, way out in the Russian boonies, no joke! My mama sat me down at a piano around age six and boom, my whole life got hijacked by black and white keys, straight up! Then at 13 I got shipped off to the Cadet School of the Guards, dressed up like a tiny toy soldier, and I graduated in 1856, can ya believe that mess? I even landed a spot in the Preobrazhensky Regiment, all shiny buttons and swagger, but in 1858 I peaced out of the army life to chase music full-time, 'cause marching in straight lines was whack! The Mighty Handful Squad
Okay, so enter Mily Balakirev, my first real teacher, and he schooled me on musical form like a drill sergeant with a baton, no cap! He straight-up admitted he couldn't teach me harmony, which is hilarious, so I basically freestyled that part and just vibed my way through, bruh! By 1867 I was running with a crew of composers that a dude named Vladimir Stasov dubbed the Mighty Handful, which sounds like the world's chunkiest snack but was actually a legit Russian music gang! Then I cooked up Boris Godunov in 1868 and 1869, the Mariinsky Theatre slammed the door in my face, I fixed it up, and it finally hit the stage in February 1874, so take that, haters!Broke in Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg was my stomping ground, a giant frosty city where I paid the bills as a low-grade civil servant, which is a fancy way of saying I pushed papers, ugh! In the 1860s I crammed into a six-man commune, six dudes in one pad, picture the chaos, the snoring, the dishes, the drama, holy moly! Come 1867 I got declared supernumerary, which means unpaid, so basically my boss said 'thanks for showing up, here's zilch,' how rude is that? Later I bounced over to the Forestry Department while finishing Boris Godunov, and in 1871 and 1872 I even shared rooms with Rimsky-Korsakov, a total roommate-meets-genius situation, wild! The Big Hits, Baby
Alright, lemme hit ya with the bangers on this site, starting with Night on Bald Mountain, a witches' rave on a hilltop, pure spooky madness! I finished my orchestral version in 1867, and get this, nobody played it while I was alive, not once, zero, nada, I got ghosted by an entire orchestra! The version ya usually hear at concerts is Rimsky-Korsakov's arrangement, so shout-out to my buddy for cleaning up my wild hair and making it a crowd-pleaser, I guess! Then there's Pictures at an Exhibition, which I wrote for solo piano in 1874 to remember my pal, the artist Viktor Hartmann, like a stroll through a gallery where every painting hits ya right in the feelings, ridiculous!Bottle Troubles and Bad Vibes
Now for the sad, messy part, fam, 'cause my drinking got serious in 1865 after my mother died, and it was a total gut-punch, man! It only got worse through the 1870s, like a snowball rolling downhill and gathering every bad decision in sight, yikes! By 1875 I was fed up with my old crew, writing that the Mighty Handful had degenerated into soulless traitors, which is some seriously savage group-chat energy, whew! So there I was, a genius with a fat creative engine and a leaky life, stumbling around like a bear that lost its map, what a plot twist!Lights Out, Portrait On
In 1880 I got dismissed from the Office of Government Control, so my paperwork career officially flopped, goodbye desk, goodbye paycheck! In early 1881 I had four seizures and went through delirium tremens, and that was the moment my body basically screamed 'enough, dude!' Ilya Repin came to the Nikolaevsky Military Hospital in March 1881 and painted me in four sittings, my hair a mess, my eyes blazing, and that portrait hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow now, how fancy is that? I died on 28 March 1881, just a week after turning 42, and they laid me to rest at Tikhvin Cemetery in Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Saint Petersburg, so Repin never even got the final sitting, man, rude timing! My Messy Afterlife
When I kicked the bucket, Khovanshchina was left unfinished, and Rimsky-Korsakov swooped in to complete it, so it premiered in Saint Petersburg in 1886, legend behavior right there! Pictures at an Exhibition also finally hit print in 1886, and then Ravel orchestrated it in 1922, which blew it up big time, like fireworks on a piano, boom! For ages people only knew my stuff through versions other folks tweaked, Rimsky-Korsakov even re-orchestrated Boris Godunov in 1896, but now the Moscow State Institute for Art Studies is publishing an Academic Edition of my originals, so my raw sound is coming back, yo! And I'm stoked that Shostakovich and Prokofiev took notes from me, 'cause nothing feels better than the cool kids borrowing your homework, ha!My Gift to Your Ears
So here's the deal, friend, I'm not handing ya polished marble, I'm handing ya real, raw, gritty life in sound, the kind that grabs your collar and won't let go! Wanna feel a spooky hilltop party, a creaky gallery of pictures, a dusty Russian crowd shouting in the street? I've got ya covered, no sweat! Don't stress about fancy rules or what a harmony is supposed to be, 'cause I never learned that part either, and look how it turned out, totally fine! Just hit play, crank it up, let the weirdness crash over ya, and trust me, your ears will thank me later, peace out!---
Yo yo yo, hold up, hold up, fam, did ya vibe with my life story or what, was it a straight-up banger for ya, or did it have ya yawnin' like a sleepy cat?
