Hollup Battle Maiden Airlines with Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries
The Backstory

Ride of the Valkyries, WWV 86B

Wagner presenting the backstory of his Ride of the Valkyries
Yo yo yo, it's me, Wagner, and I'm kickin' the door wide open on the backstory of Ride of the Valkyries, fam, deadass! Ya gonna find out how I forbade this banger from bein' played on its own, then conducted it in London in 1877 and ran it back as an encore, bruh, total plot twist! Right here on this site, me and my fellow composers are trainin' ya to recognize our pieces the second they blast on, so  jump into the Trainer  and flex, lowkey!

Wait, It's Just One Chunk?

Yo yo, hold up, fam, Ride of the Valkyries ain't some solo banger I cooked up for the radio, it's the prelude to the first scene of Act 3 in Die Walküre, no cap, sheesh! Die Walküre is the second of my four Ring music dramas, bruh, so picture a four-season binge, except with thunder and zero commercials, deadass! The Germans call it Walkürenritt or Ritt der Walküren, which sounds like somebody sneezin' at a fancy buffet, ayo, but it's the same wild gallop! So when your cousin hums it like it's its own little hit, grab him by the hoodie and tell him it's a scene-opener from a way bigger saga, lowkey!

Exile Szn, Zürich Edition

Okay, okay, rewind a sec, 'cause back then I was livin' in exile in Zürich, and that was hella rough, my guy! The 1849 Dresden uprising flopped harder than a belly-flop contest, fr fr, and after that I was stuck out there, no home turf, nothin'! No big shiny opera house, bet, just me, a mountain of paper, and dreams so huge they needed their own zip code! Writin' Valkyries from a Zürich apartment was like inventin' thunder in a closet, dawg, straight-up wild!

Broke But Make It Epic

Money? Ha! I was often short on cash, like diggin'-through-the-couch-cushions short, for real! Lucky for me, friends and patrons kept me afloat, like Otto Wesendonck, and yo, that dude was a total legend, no joke! Think of him as the pal who keeps payin' for the group pizza, except the pizza was a whole four-part epic, sheesh! Without that kinda backup I'd have been ramen-deep and cryin' in the corner, highkey, and the Valkyries might still be stuck in my noggin!

Words First, Notes Later

Here's the order of operations, fam: I wrote the Die Walküre libretto in June 1852, so the story was locked in way before the full score, boom! Then Das Rheingold wrapped up in May 1854, and bam, that next month, June 1854, I started composin' the Die Walküre music, bussin'! That's like finishin' one season and jumpin' straight into the next, zero nap time, my dude, brutal! My brain was runnin' on pure espresso and ambition, legit, and I wasn't even sorry about it!

Plot Twist: Philosophy and Feelings

Then in 1854 I bumped into Schopenhauer's philosophy, and bruh, that stuff hit me like a cliffhanger in a soap opera! Around the same time my relationship with Mathilde Wesendonck was developin', ooh, spicy, but I'm keepin' it classy, ya feel me? So picture me with deep thoughts on one shoulder, big feelings on the other, and a whole squad of Valkyries screamin' for attention, what a janky mess! All that drama was swirlin' around while the music grew, and honestly, that's a recipe for a gallop that don't quit, I swear!

From Sketch to Full Orchestra

A preliminary draft showed up in 1854, and by the end of March 1856 the whole opera was orchestrated, boss level, deadass! I didn't write it for a commission or some fancy shindig, nope, it was just part of the Ring cycle I dreamed up as one giant dramatic work, sick, right? In the opera the Ride takes about eight minutes, so grab a snack, homie, but as a standalone concert piece it can be as short as three minutes, wow! Three minutes! That's a speed-run, my guy, quicker than a gas-station burrito spinnin' in the microwave, no cap!

Munich Did Me Dirty

Now check this, Die Walküre premiered on 26 June 1870 at the Königliches Hof- und National-Theater in Munich, with Franz Wüllner conductin', big moves, ayo! But here's the catch: King Ludwig II of Bavaria insisted on that staging, I objected, and I didn't show up, major salty vibes, yo! Ghosted my own premiere, can ya believe it, not one seat warmed by my behind, talk about savage! Plot twist for the history nerds: the Ride was heard in Munich six years before the Bayreuth Ring, so don't let anybody tell ya different, period!

Don't Ya Dare Play That Solo

By January 1871 folks were beggin' me to let the Ride get performed on its own, and I called that 'an utter indiscretion' and forbade it, nope nope nope! Meanwhile, the piece got printed and sold in Leipzig anyway, whoa, what a sneaky move, fam! So I fired off complaints to my publisher Schott, loud like a toddler whose fries got swiped, hella petty, I know! That gallop belonged to Act 3, scene 1, not to some random concert-hall mixtape, ya hear me, no way!

Ban Lifted, Encore Unlocked

Then Die Walküre rolled into Bayreuth on 14 August 1876 under Hans Richter, as part of the first Ring cycles at the first Bayreuth Festival, huge, bruh! After the complete Ring got staged there, I lifted my own ban, 'cause hey, a man can change his mind, no shame, fr fr! On 12 May 1877 I conducted the Ride in London, and I repeated it as an encore, which is a total flex, sheesh! Imagine bannin' your own jam and then playin' it twice in one night, that's some big-brain clout, lowkey!

Movie Star Status

Fast-forward a bunch, and my gallop went Hollywood, dawg, 'cause Apocalypse Now in 1979 blasts it over loudspeakers during a helicopter assault on a village, intense, yo! It also pops up in The Birth of a Nation from 1915, in 8 1/2, and even in the cartoon What's Opera, Doc? from 1957, which is peak absurd, I'm obsessed! Folks grab it all the time to scream stereotypical grand opera, like a shortcut button for 'big dramatic singin' incoming', hilarious, right? It's up there with my Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin as one of my best-known works, and not bad for a guy who was once broke in Zürich, goated, no question!
---
Yo yo, hold up, hold up, we're wrappin' this one, but lemme grab ya by the shoulder first, 'cause that was a wild ride, for real! Did you enjoy learning about the backstory of Ride of the Valkyries, or did it knock your socks clean off and launch 'em into orbit, huh? Think about it, I straight-up banned that gallop from the concert hall, and then I conducted it in London on 12 May 1877 and ran it back as an encore, 'cause apparently I'm the king of changin' my mind, sheesh! Ayo, a banned banger turnin' into a crowd-pleaser, that's the kinda plot twist that makes my wig spin, no joke! Now peep this, we've barely scratched the surface, ya hear me? There's a whole mountain of other stuff about Ride of the Valkyries still sittin' up there waitin' for ya, and it's gonna be a total blast, swear down! So smash those links below, tap 'em like they owe ya money, and keep divin' into Ride of the Valkyries till your ears are begging for a nap, bet!
