Yo yo yo, fam, grab a seat and lemme show ya how to eavesdrop on Night on Bald Mountain, 'cause it's about twelve minutes of pure rollercoaster, and I'm not even playin'! First, tune in to the strings, ya hear me, since they're the swarmin' bees of this whole shindig, zippin' and zoomin' like a scooter gang with zero brakes, wild! Then peep the flutes and that tiny piccolo screechin' up top like a tea kettle havin' a meltdown, while the trombones and tuba stomp around down low like grumpy giants who just lost their sneakers, sheesh! And when the timpani, bass drum, cymbals and tam-tam come crashin' in, don't jump outta your skin, bruh, cuz that's just my percussion crew throwin' a tantrum, with a harp and a tubular bell sneakin' in for extra spooky sauce, for real! Why I Slapped That Name On It
Okay okay okay, so why Night on Bald Mountain, ya ask? Lemme rewind, homie, 'cause my first title was St. John's Eve on Bald Mountain, and that's a total mouthful, huh? That mountain's a legit hangout, dude, and the story goes that witches throw their bash up there on St. John's Night, so naming my piece after the party spot was a no-brainer, boom! I was 28 in 1867, a young buck rollin' with the circle called The Five, and I wrapped up the orchestration on 23 June at Minkino farm, the eve of St. John's Day, so talk about perfect timin', baby! Folks in English also call it Night on the Bare Mountain, which sounds like a chilly nature hike, lol, but nope, it's the same witchy rager, I swear! Not A Sonata, Not A Rondo, Just Pure Chaos
Pickin' the form for this beast was a whole side quest, y'all, 'cause I wasn't about to cram witches into a boring sonata box or spin 'em round in a rondo like socks in a dryer, nah! What I went with was a tone poem, bruh, which means the orchestra tells a story with zero words and zero singers, just pure sound-drama, that's the trick! My 1867 original has four parts, Assembly of the Witches, Satan's Cortège, Black Mass and Sabbath, stacked up like a four-layer cake of nightmares, yum! I'm gonna hit each part one by one in the next few paragraphs, so buckle up, buttercup, this exploration's gonna be off the chain!Section 1: Witches Doing Their Warm-Up Stretches
Alright, Section 1 is Assembly of the Witches, and it's all frantic whispers swirlin' up outta nowhere, like a thousand gossipers sprintin' toward one juicy rumor, wild! The speed feels like a snowball rollin' downhill, gettin' faster and fatter, while the harmony wobbles around like a shoppin' cart with one busted wheel, nutty! Up top, the high woodwinds shriek while the low brass growl right back, so the mood flips from sneaky to full-on panic in like two seconds flat, my guy! Spoiler, I never got to hear a single note of it played live, which is hella savage, right?Section 2: Satan's Grand Entrance, Red Carpet And All
Next up, Section 2 is Satan's Cortège, and ooh boy, the chaos chills into a creepy parade where the grand marshal's a total menace, snap! The beat gets steady and stompy, so ya can practically tap your foot along, but the tune keeps slinkin' sideways like a cat plottin' something sneaky, ha! Brass and low strings do the heavy liftin' here, rumblin' like your neighbor's subwoofer at 3 a.m., and that mood shift from panic to menace is chef's kiss, I'm tellin' ya! Basically, the party stops bein' a scramble and turns into a flex-fest where the boss rolls up and everybody zips their lips, period!Section 3: Black Mass, Where Everything Gets Weirdly Slow
Section 3 is the Black Mass, and, yo, the tempo drags its feet like a kid on the way to the dentist, all slow and heavy and dark, ugh! Low brass moan out the gloom, the bass drum thuds like a giant heartbeat, and that tam-tam shimmers like a thundercloud clearin' its throat, whoa! After the mad dash, the sudden creep feels like somebody smashed pause on a rollercoaster, and your stomach's goin' 'bro, what now?', legit! That mood swing from frantic to funeral-slow is my favorite sneaky trick, cuz weight and hush can spook ya harder than any loud blast, trust!Section 4: Sabbath, The Mother Of All Raves
Finally, Section 4 is the Sabbath, ya heard, and the witches go full rave, speed cranked back up like somebody sat on the fast-forward button, bam! Violins whirl, cymbals clatter, and the whole orchestra goes ham in a dizzy spin, so hold onto your hat, dude! Then comes the plot twist, 'cause Rimsky-Korsakov made his version in 1886, five years after I died in 1881, and his calm close borrows music from Gritsko's aria in Sorochintsy Fair, so the mayhem melts into a hush, aww! That swing from wild frenzy to soft sigh is the final mood flip, and it hits like a mug of warm cocoa right after a mosh pit, ahh!Hit Play And Go Haunt Yourself

Let the sound wash over ya like a bucket of cold spooky, and keep those witches, that parade, the slow creep and the rave in your back pocket while ya listen, yeah? Rimsky-Korsakov's version was an instant hit and a concert favorite, and Stokowski dressed it up for Disney's Fantasia in 1940, so this tune's been hauntin' folks for ages, crazy, right? I hope ya get hyped like I got hyped when I scribbled it down, 'cause this ride's gonna rock your socks off, peace out!---
